Your First Gym Session: A Calm Guide

The hardest part of a first gym session isn't the squat. It's the doorway — that moment where everyone else seems to know exactly what they're doing and you're holding a water bottle and a vague memory of a video you saved. So let's take the guesswork out of it, step by step.

Before you go: pick the plan, not the exercises

Don't build a workout from scratch — that's a skill you'll grow into, not a prerequisite. Open Katado, tap a workout type — Upper body, Lower body, or Full body are all good first choices — and you'll get a complete session: exercises, order, and sets, laid out like a checklist. Six exercises is the default; tap the selector down to four or five if you want a shorter first day. That's it. The thinking is done before you leave the house.

At the gym: follow the chips

Your workout is a list of chips — one per set. Work top to bottom:

  1. Find the machine or the weights for the first exercise. If it's taken, start with the next exercise and come back — order matters less than moving.
  2. Pick a starting weight that feels almost too easy. For most machine exercises, start light, do a set, and add a little if it felt like nothing. Katado's wheel makes changing the number a one-second job — there is no prize for guessing right on set one.
  3. Tap the set done. Rest for a minute or two — longer is fine. Nobody is timing you.
  4. Repeat until the chips run out.

If a machine confuses you, the video you saved is allowed to help — watch the 15 seconds you need. That's what it's for.

How hard should it feel?

After each set Katado asks one question: how hard did that feel? Answer honestly on the 1–10 scale. Early on, most sets should feel like a 6 or 7 — "I could have done a few more." Leaving something in the tank isn't cheating; it's how you make sure there's a second session.

That answer isn't busywork. It's how Katado learns what to suggest next time, so your second session starts smarter than your first.

The only goal that matters

Your first session has one job: end it wanting to come back. Not exhausted, not humbled — just done, with a plan that ran itself and a page that now has one workout on it.

The second session is easier. You'll open the app, your history will be there, and the weights will already know where you left off. That's the way this works: one calm session at a time, each one a little more yours.
